The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.
Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that the captain is progressing and remained hopeful about the prospects of participating.
"It's clear that the clock is ticking and there are permutations at play, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. If not, we'll adjust."
He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.
He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.
Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the contest.
Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.
Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a safety move because of soreness in his side.
Bailey described it as a "small issue and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the opening match as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to adopt a safer strategy."
