While I found the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was a personal epiphany: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.
Amphibians have been not at all new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. However, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.
To grasp this trend, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The findings paint a clear picture: a consistent increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's elevated place in the public consciousness is also visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming looks especially strong.
Honestly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in design advantages for game developers.
A number of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year yet.
When these games perform well—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we might just be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
